Trauma changes how the body and mind respond to the world. Sleep, trust, concentration, relationships and even the sense of being safe in your own home can all be affected, sometimes years after the event. Trauma-informed therapy works on that response directly, so that what happened can become part of your history instead of something you keep reliving.

Najla Sallum is a Florida Licensed Clinical Social Worker (SW19846) with more than 14 years of clinical practice, and particular experience with complex trauma, domestic violence recovery, and trauma connected to immigration and leaving one's home country.

What trauma therapy can help with

  • PTSD and complex PTSD
  • Childhood trauma that still shapes adult life
  • Recovery after domestic violence
  • Trauma related to immigration, displacement or asylum
  • Medical trauma and traumatic grief
  • Nightmares, flashbacks, hypervigilance and numbness

Three phases, in order

Stabilization comes first: coping skills, safety and calming the nervous system, so you have solid ground before anything difficult is touched. Processing comes next, using EMDR-informed and narrative approaches, at a pace your body can hold. The last phase is integration: rebuilding meaning, identity and connection after trauma.

You set the pace throughout. Trauma-informed care means you are never re-victimized by being made to retell the story on someone else's schedule.

Childhood trauma in adults

Many adults come in for anxiety, relationship trouble or low mood and discover the roots go back to childhood. That is common, and it is workable. Therapy helps you understand how early experiences shaped the patterns you live with now, and gives you room to change them.

Frequently asked

Will I have to talk about the trauma right away?

No. Therapy starts with stabilization and safety. You decide when, and how much, to share. Nobody will push you to retell your story before you are ready.

Do you offer EMDR?

Processing work is EMDR-informed, combined with narrative approaches. Najla will explain what that means for you on the consultation call.

Is this the same as an immigration psychological evaluation?

No. An evaluation is a one-time clinical report for an immigration case. Trauma therapy is ongoing treatment. Evaluations are handled through Najla's own practice at najlasallum.com.

Can sessions be online?

Yes. Secure video is available anywhere in Florida, or you can come in person to the Boca Raton office.

Do you take insurance?

Sessions are private pay. You receive a superbill you can submit to your insurance for out-of-network reimbursement, if your plan offers it.
